About Longclaw

For five centuries the Valyrian steel sword Longclaw was carried by the Lords of Bear Island in the service of the Starks of Winterfell. Passed from father to son, the hand-and-a-half sword - called a bastard sword by the uncouth - had a great history while in their possession. That came to an end, however, when the last lord of the House, Jorah Mormont, was disgraced and fled Lord Stark's justice. Jorah went into exile, but left behind the sword which then found its way back to his father, Jeor, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

Longclaw was kept out of sight, until the fateful night came when a wight - a dead man brought to life by creatures out of nightmarish legend - sought to throttle the Old Bear in his sleep. It was his steward, Jon Snow, and Snow's albino direwolf Ghost who rescued him by setting the wight ablaze. Though part of Lord Jeor's apartments were burned down following this, the fire would need to have burned a hundred times hotter to harm the blade that was forged in old Valyria before the Doom. The ancient silver bear's head pommel and the hilt was burned, but these were replaced at the Old Bear's command with something befitting Snow. Given the sword, now adorned with a wolf's head pommel, and the opportunity to rename it as a gift. Jon Snow responded that wolves have claws just as bears do, and kept the proud name as it was.

A Man has his third and final sword...

Posted by Robert Forrest on Jul 21st 2012

#1894 of 2500. Once again Battle Orders have been superb and I've even called to tell them as much, I would use them again without question. However Parcel Force managed to fail on all three deliveries I've received regarding this set and I have sent a disgruntled letter stating as much. But once again Battle Orders and Valyrian Steel in the US have both been fantastic.

On to the sword. Longclaw is simply stunning, no pictures do any of these swords justice until they are in your hand. The wolf's head I thought may be a little cheap and plastic pommel, but it looks and feels beautifully made and sturdy, the faux garnets are gorgeous, and the blade itself feels weighty and well balanced, the point is very sharp and the rat-tail tang goes all the way to the wolf's neck. It's simply beautiful and the set of all 3 are stunning. I consider myself very lucky that I found Battle Orders through google, as Valyrian Steel are out of both Longclaw and Ice at this point in time.

I can not recommend both companies and the whole Game of Thrones Collection enough to any potential collectors, do not miss out, and these are the companies to buy from!

    Longclaw 1869
First of all unwrapping it is nearly as sweet as the sword its self, simply wonderful box and good packaging. As for the sword its self, OH MY GOD!, its astounding, a lot bigger than I first thought, the blade is goregous, so is the hilt. It is simply a wonderful sword, this is going to make for a brilliant anniversary present for the other half

    Amazingly beautiful weapon

Posted by Anonymous on Jul 5th 2012

I just reviewed Longclaw 2322. This sword is amazingly crafted and beautiful to behold. The blade patterning is a bit cheesy, but adds a nice effect to the metal. My wolf head was chipped on the ear during shipping, revealing the metal beneath. On a positive note, the leather grip feels amazing when held, and the sword definitely has some nice weight to it. The wights of the world better watch out- ive got a deadly medieval weapon and im not afraid to use it!

I had been housitting and finally made it home over the weekend to open up my Longclaw! I love it!! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE IT!! All I need now is to decide the perfect place to hang it. I hate I waited til the last minute, but am very happy with my purchase. I just saw the post saying there are only about 200 of ICE left so I have ordered that one today and I look forward to tearing into that box like a kid at Christmas next week! Thank you for the quality workmanship and obvious attention to the details. I'm debating on King Robert's War Hammer or Needle next......

Thanks again!

    Awesome detaililing

    Sword #1510
I had been planning to purchase Longclaw for a while when V.S. announced that they were almost sold out. I was out of the country and wouldn't be back for another 3 days, and by the time I got home they were completely sold out. I was shocked. I searched other retailers and managed to find one website that still stocked Longclaw for a reasonable price
($210 w/ shipping included, 3 day UPS), and when I bought it I was informed that there were only two left. A few days later, and I would've never gotten this beautiful swords.

The box itself is beautiful, though the back has two grammatical errors
(a repeating of "the", and a missing space). The problem unfortunately carries to the certificate, and I'm a little surprised that such an error actually made it past all QC. The plaque fit snugly to the wall and greatly compliments the sword hilt.
For reference, I compared Longclaw to my United Cutlery Anduril
(LotR), another high quality wallhanger. Though Anduril is slightly longer, Longclaw's blade is actually roughly 1.5x wider, allowing three fullers. Because of this, Longclaw actually looks larger, and I frankly thought Anduril was huge.
The hilt is a bit more substantial than Anduril's, making it a better fit for larger hands. Both swords use leather wrappings, but while Anduril's feels like the leather you might find on a comfortable chair, Longclaw has a much softer, thinner suede. It's hard to say which is better.
The acid-etched markings on Longclaw are beautiful, and the pictures truly don't do justice. Better yet, the way light reflects off the pattern gives the blade a much darker look than Anduril's smooth stainless steel, which is exactly what you'd expect from a Valyrian steel blade.
To hold, both swords are very solid. I have no doubt both use a "rat-tail tang", but so long as you're careful, swinging either around should pose no problem. Just don't hit anything. I was a bit wary about decorative swords after discovering my Anduril had a slight buy apparently curve off center, but so far as I can tell Longclaw is perfectly straight. Both feel about the same in weight and balance
(while Longclaw has a wider blade, it's also thinner), meaning they're blade heavy and most would have a very hard time using them in actual battle even with two hands, let alone one. Still, neither has the dreaded "blade wobble" which solidified my decision to get Longclaw over Ice.

Overall, the sword is exactly what I wanted it to be, and manages to hold up as a very high quality wallhanger sword.
5 stars.

    Good quality

Just received #2403, and I must say I am not disappointed at all. The pommel, while big, is well made and balances out the blade well. I don't have any complaints, just small nitpicks
(the certificate doesn't have the number, for example). A scabbard would be nice, since I can't seem to find one on the internet for a decent price and it would help protect the blade if I ever wanted to put it in storage. Would definitely buy from Valyrian/Jalic Blades in the future
(considering getting Needle here and the sword of Altair on their other site).
